The Story of Kathryn Cheney, MD
And now here is my secret,
a very simple secret:
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;
what is essential is invisible to the eye.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The Little Prince
Prologue:
Dr. Kathryn “Kate” Cheney learned at an early age from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s message in her favorite book, The Little Prince, that the most important information comes from deeper understanding. She believes that this is particularly true in the field of psychiatry, where a full assessment and understanding of a clinical presentation is most effectively completed by a clinician with a grasp of what different factors are impactful and how they influence each other in each unique case. Thus, in addition to strong medical and psychiatric training, it seems that life experiences allow for a more thorough and empathic understanding of the various factors contributing to someone’s clinical concerns.
Chapter 1:
Kate is the second of four children in her family from a small town in Northern New York, whose childhood was distinguished by her close family relationships, academic engagement, year-round team athletics, constant pets, weekends spent on the St. Lawrence River, and responsibilities within the family business, established by her grandfather in 1954 following his US Military Service.
Chapter 2:
Following high school graduation, Kate attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA where she majored in psychology with a pre-medical concentration. She completed her final pre-medical requirements at Dartmouth College while employed as a hostess at Jesse’s Steakhouse in Hanover, NH between 2003 and 2005. Kate returned to New York to complete her Medical Doctorate at The State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate in Syracuse where she realized her pull towards Psychiatry. Dr. Cheney then completed her General/Adult Psychiatry Residency at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt in Baltimore, MD. Finally, she returned to New York to complete her training, with her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Fellowship at NYU Langone/Bellevue Hospital, during which she served as chief resident between 2013-2014. She also collaborated with two classmates to develop and instruct an Advanced Seminar in Eating Disorders at the NYU College of Arts and Sciences.
Following her graduation from fellowship, Dr. Cheney joined the Faculty Group Practice (FGP) at the NYU Child Study Center, where she was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Staff Psychiatrist. She continued to co-instruct the Seminar in Eating Disorders at NYU in addition to her full-time clinical role. Dr. Cheney enjoyed close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team at the FGP, and particularly the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy team, of which she was an active member. She enjoyed supervising trainees during her time at NYU as well as engaging in frequent dialogue with her colleagues, sometimes with a coffee or snack over a jigsaw puzzle.
Chapter 3:
In May of 2020, at the height of the COVID Pandemic, Dr. Cheney fulfilled one of her personal dreams when she became a mother. Her daughter continues to teach her about the seemingly endless curiosity and hope of childhood and both the uncertainties and wonders of parenting.
Chapter 4:
In August of 2021, as a culmination of this personal and professional upbringing, Dr. Cheney opened her private practice in Midtown Manhattan and added her second office in Rye (Westchester County) in May of 2022. In her practice, Dr. Cheney brings the wealth of life and medical/psychiatric experience that allows her to provide compassionate, validating, thorough and thoughtful care to individuals from childhood to adulthood. She is known for her conversational yet professional style, strong rapport with clients, and collaboration with team members that allow for accurate diagnostic impressions, evidence-based psychiatric recommendations, and high-level care. Dr. Cheney enjoys working with individuals whose complexity benefits from her thoughtfulness alongside a collaborative team. She receives many of her referrals from current patients, both within and outside of their families, as well as other Tri-State area colleagues.
